The Museum of Trenčín

The Museum of Trenčín is a cultural and scientific institution with a regional activity and with over a 120-year old history. Its predecessor was the Natural Scientific Alliance of Trenčín County, established in 1877. Having united to the Museal Society in 1912, thus the Trenčín Museum originated. Its first chairman became the doctor Karol Brančík, a county doctor and enthomologist with an international significance.

In spite of its own natural scientific traditions, the Museum is a type of homeland science. It possesses and administers the funds of historical, art-scientific, natural scientific, literature-historical or ethnologic character. The Museum owns opulent collections of numismatics, faleristics, filocarts, militaries and weapons, as well as art craft. To those most valuable sets indisputably belongs a wide and historically interesting picture collection of the Illeshazy family, who, from 1594 to 1835 had owned the Trenčín castle and had been inheritable county men of the Trenčín and Liptovian district.

Except for its capital edifice at the Peace Square (so-called County House) the Museum of Trenčín superintends even over the castle with many expositions, as well as the Karner of St.Michael, so-called the Executor´s House and many other expositions and properties outside Trenčín. The subsidiary in Nové Mesto nad Váhom has had located the exposition named From The History of Nové Mesto and Surroundings. The exposition at Ambro manor house in Beckov is devoted to the history of this township, as well as to the Tatrín Union along with a distinguished national rioter Jozef Miloslav Hurban. The exposition in Čachtice reminds of not only the village´s history, but also a notable "Bloody Countess" Elizabeth Bathory.Nearby, in Očkov, a visitor can look over the tumulus of a chief from the era of Velatic-willendorf civilization (the Early Bronze Age). In Bzince pod Javorinou a caller can look through the Memorial Room of writer Ľudmila Podjavorinská.

As a part of the region with rich history and culture, the Museum of Trenčín is effortfully engaged just in the history of Trenčín and surroundings, which indicates the exposition named From the History And Culture of Privileged Trenčín Town and Quondam Trenčín County (recently opened in the County House at the Peace Square N° 46 in Trenčín).
Trenčín itself arose as a commercial settlement below the mighty castle in twelfth century. In 1412 it had been privileged to the independent royal town. Nowadays it is the city of the region and the domicile of the regional authorities of the state administration.
For the period of nearly 700 years it has been performing the function of administrative, commercial and cultural centre of the Middle Váh Valley. It is the centre of Trenčín self-governing region.
